There is nothing more frustrating than the sound of bugs hitting your clean windshield, or the sight of the front of your car that’s littered with bug splatter. Worse yet, your windshield wipers do close to nothing to wash away the bugs.
If you drive your car often, chances are you’ve encountered insect remains all over the car’s front bumper, side mirrors, headlights and windshield. Bug splatter is one of the toughest stains to clean off the surface of your car, and the longer it sits, the more difficult it becomes to get rid of.
Modern cars are painted using a basecoat and clearcoat system. The top layer of the car's paint is a layer of clear paint that protects the basecoat, which is the color, underneath it. The clear coated top layer is what creates that glossy and shiny look.
What You Need to Know
Bugs are living creatures that contain highly acidic bodily fluids that cannot be removed with a regular, pH-balanced car wash. If these stains are left on the car for too long and exposed to the sun, they will become permanently baked into the finish, ruining the flawless paint job. To remove bug stains from your car, you should use a dedicated bug remover product.
You’ll want to use a powerful bug remover spray that neutralizes the bug splatter acidity and removes them from the surface of your car. We recommend a specialty cleaner, like 3D Bug Remover, which was designed specifically to remove tough bug stains. Our bug remover spray in a simple spray-on solution that will save you time and elbow grease it would typically take to scrub away bug stains using a conventional car wash solution.
The sooner you get rid of all the bugs, the less prone your vehicle will be to clearcoat and paint damage!
Cleaning Bugs Off Your Car
The 3D Car Care experts have two techniques to get rid of bugs from your bumper, windshield, and any other surface. The first is the spray and wipe approach, and the second is the pre-soak technique.
Spray & Wipe
The spray and wipe technique is great when you’re on the go and don’t have time to properly wash your car. This is the most pro-active approach because you’re able to remove the bug's acidic characteristics as it happens, rather than letting it bake into the surface.
Step 1: Spray a generous amount of 3D Bug Remover to any area of your car with dead bugs and/or bug splatter and allow the product to dwell for 30 to 45 seconds. In cooler temperatures, you can even let the product soak for a few minutes for better results.
Step 2: Using a clean, soft, and dry microfiber towel, gently wipe the product off the treated surface. Take note that after the initial wipe, you may have bug remnants on the towels itself, so it’s important to have extra sets of fresh microfiber towels on hand.
If the initial spray and wipe didn’t completely remove the bugs or if the product itself has dried, simply repeat step one on the affected area.
Step 3: Once all of the bugs have been removed and cleaned off, use a premium quick detail spray over the areas you used the bug remover on. Once the affected surfaces have been thoroughly cleaned, we suggest using a hydrophobic protectant, such as 3D Bead It Up. This makes cleaning bugs off the bumper, windshield, and other surfaces much easier in the future, as the bug will simply wipe away effortlessly.
The pre-soak technique is similar to the spray and wipe approach, but offers a much more thorough end result. This is a great way to not only remove all the bugs from the vehicle's surface, but to fully wash the vehicle as well.
Step 1: Spray a generous amount of 3D Bug Remover onto any area with bugs and bug splatter. Let the solution sit for a few minutes, allowing it to chemically break-down all of the acidity the bugs left behind.
Step 2: Using a water hose or pressure washer, spray the treated areas down to remove as much bug remains as possible. Typically, all of the bugs are cleaned off during this stage. Using water helps minimize the risk of scratching your paint and avoids getting your wash mitt dirty as well.
Step 3: Continue to wash your vehicle using your normal wash routine and thoroughly dry the car.
Step 4: Once the vehicle is fully de-bugged and clean, we highly recommend using our hydrophobic protectant; 3D Bead It Up. This can be used on the entire vehicle, or just the culprit areas where bugs get stuck on, such as the windshield, front bumper, and side mirrors.
